Tennis
In Autumn 1, KS1 children were taught tennis at the Vernon Park Tennis Courts. They learned about the fundamentals and techniques such as tennis court layout, proper stance, throwing and catching, volleying and simple service motions. Compared to most sports tennis is a tricky sport to learn especially when most of them have never pick up the tennis racket before, but they were quick to learn and have been progressing positively throughout the lessons. Well done, KS1!
Ice-Skating
In Autumn 2, KS1 children took part in ice-skating lessons at National Ice Centre. The children learned about the systems and rules as a start before putting their skates on. They were quite tentative at first, clinging to the barriers before slowly moving away and shuffled around the edge of the rink. Most children had a little help from the penguins but as they grew in confidence they started to feel right at home on the ice. Despite few tumbles they picked themselves up and carried on, displaying great determination and perseverance. By the third week they were already skating from one point to another. The staff are incredibly proud of their efforts and the progress that they have made within such a short amount of time. Well done, KS1!
Archery
In Spring Term, KS1 children were taught the basic skills and techniques of archery. The lesson began with a safety brief and introduction to the equipment. They aim, fire and improve their archery skills by feeling the strength of the bow and the speed of the arrow as they fire at a variety of targets developing accuracy each time!
Swimming
In Summer Term, KS1 children had the opportunity to go swimming at the Djanogly Community Leisure Centre and are taught by qualified swimming instructors. All children were assessed and grouped at their first session. Throughout their swimming lessons, the children enjoyed a range of water-based activities as well as learning a range of water safety skills such as water safety, entry, exit, aquatic breathing, travel and coordination. This helps the pupils to develop further their swimming strokes as well as their water confidence.
Others
Besides outdoor activities, in school KS1 children learned fundamental movement skills and engaged in variety physical activities throughout the year such as basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities. They participated in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending. They also performed simple movement patterns in gymnastic lessons.
